Chapter 8 - The Shrinking Sky

Daniel broke the surface, gasping violently for air.
He looked up. The sky was disappearing. The heavy Kevlar security cover had already deployed across more than half of the massive pool. It was moving relentlessly, an unstoppable black wave erasing the sunlight.
"Help us!" Daniel screamed toward the narrowing gap.
Outside, he could hear the muffled sounds of utter chaos. Guests were shrieking in panic. He heard the heavy thud of men throwing their bodies against the motorized cover, trying desperately to pry it open with their bare hands. It was useless. The industrial tracks locked the cover firmly into the concrete deck.
"The fire department is on the way!" a muffled voice yelled from above.
But they wouldn't arrive in time. The gap was shrinking by the second. Soon, the pool would be entirely sealed.
Daniel took another massive, gulping breath, filling his lungs to capacity, and dove back down into the rapidly darkening water.
Valeria was completely unresponsive now. The small, waterproof fetal monitor strapped tightly to her belly—a device her doctor had insisted she wear during her third trimester to track the baby's heart rate—emitted a weak, flickering green light in the gloom.

Daniel swam toward her, his mind racing through impossible scenarios. He noticed the fetal monitor. It was secured by a thick, metallic clasp with a sharp, elongated pin meant to connect to the sensor pads.
It was a desperate, crazy idea, but it was his only option.
