Chapter 34 - The Anniversary

The anniversary of the pool incident approached, a date that had once been a source of profound, lingering trauma. But this year, Valeria decided to reclaim it.
Instead of hiding from the memory, she organized a massive, joyous bonfire on the beach directly behind their house. She invited their new friends from the coastal town, the local fishermen Daniel worked with, and the neighbors who had welcomed them with open arms.
As the sun dipped below the horizon, painting the sky in breathtaking shades of violent orange and deep purple, the bonfire roared to life, casting a warm, golden glow over the gathered crowd.
Music played from a portable speaker, and the sound of genuine, unfiltered laughter filled the night air.
Valeria stood near the edge of the water, letting the cool waves wash over her bare feet. She closed her eyes, remembering the suffocating darkness of the pool, the terror of the heavy chains, and the feeling of her lungs burning.
But then, she opened her eyes. The darkness was gone. She looked back at the fire.
Daniel was standing there, holding Sofia on his shoulders, laughing as the little girl pointed excitedly at the sparks flying into the night sky.
Valeria walked up the beach, slipping her arms around Daniel’s waist. He leaned down, kissing her softly.
"I love you," Daniel whispered over the crackle of the fire.

"I love you too," Valeria smiled.
She realized that the trauma would always be a part of her story, but it no longer defined her. She had forged her pain into an unbreakable armor, protecting the beautiful, quiet life they had fought so fiercely to build.
