Chapter 21 - The Shadow in the Mail

The absolute peace of the coastal wooden house was a sanctuary they had bled for. For six months, the rhythmic crashing of the Atlantic waves had replaced the suffocating, toxic whispers of the Valdés estate. Valeria spent her mornings in the sunlit nursery with Sofia, while Daniel poured his energy into a small, legitimate marine restoration business he had purchased down by the harbor. They had severed all ties to the cursed family fortune. They were finally free.

Or so they thought.

It was a rainy Tuesday afternoon when the heavy, wax-sealed envelope arrived. Daniel found it resting conspicuously on the wooden porch step, deliberately bypassing their rural mailbox.

He walked into the kitchen, his face pale, holding the envelope by the corner. Valeria, who was pureeing fresh mangoes for Sofia, stopped immediately. The change in the atmosphere was instantaneous.

"Daniel? What is it?" she asked, wiping her hands on a towel.

"It has the Valdés corporate seal," Daniel replied, his voice dropping to a low, dangerous rumble. He sliced it open with a kitchen knife.

Inside was a single, typed legal document and a photograph. The photograph was taken from a distance, showing Valeria holding Sofia on the beach just two days ago. Someone had been watching them.

"They found us," Valeria whispered, a cold knot of dread pooling in her stomach. "Teresa is in a maximum-security prison. She was denied bail. How is this possible?"

Daniel read the legal document, his jaw clenching so tightly a muscle ticked in his cheek.

"It isn't my mother," Daniel said, his eyes darkening with a fierce, protective rage. "It’s my uncle. Ricardo Valdés. He has returned from Europe to seize control of the corporate board. And according to this document, he is filing a petition for full legal guardianship of Sofia, claiming we are financially and mentally unfit."

Valeria stared at the photograph, the terrifying reality setting in. The monsters weren't all locked away. A new one had just stepped out of the shadows.
