Chapter 37 - The Sanctuary of the Coast

Daniel drove his truck up the gravel driveway of their coastal home, keeping the heater on maximum to stop Isabella’s shivering. When he opened the front door, the smell of fresh coffee and baking bread filled the air.
Valeria was sitting on the living room rug, building a tower of wooden blocks with Sofia. She looked up, her bright smile faltering the moment she saw the terrified, bruised girl standing behind her husband.
Daniel didn't need to explain. Valeria took one look at Isabella’s bruised cheek, the defensive posture, and the haunted exhaustion in her eyes, and she understood everything. The maternal, protective instinct that had helped her survive the Valdés estate instantly took over.
Valeria stood up, leaving the blocks, and walked slowly toward the door. She didn't ask questions. She didn't overwhelm the girl.
"You must be freezing," Valeria said softly, offering a warm, welcoming smile. "Come sit by the fire. I have a hot shower drawing upstairs, and plenty of clean, warm clothes that will fit you perfectly."
Isabella hesitated, looking from Daniel to Valeria. "I don't have any money to pay you. He froze my bank accounts."
"We don't want your money," Valeria replied, gently taking Isabella’s hand and leading her to the plush sofa near the stone fireplace. "We just want you to be safe."
For the next two hours, the house transformed into a sanctuary. While Isabella took a long, hot shower, Valeria prepared a massive, comforting breakfast. Daniel sat at the kitchen island, his jaw tight.
"She said he owns the police," Daniel muttered to his wife. "It brought it all back, Val. The absolute arrogance of men who think their wealth makes them gods."
"Who is he?" Valeria asked, setting down a plate of eggs.
When Isabella finally came downstairs, dressed in Valeria’s comfortable sweatpants and an oversized sweater, she looked significantly more human. She sat at the table, eating ravenously. Slowly, between bites, the horrific story spilled out.
Her fiancé was Vicente Castillo, a massively wealthy luxury resort developer who operated in the neighboring province. Like Marcus and Ricardo, Vicente was a master manipulator. He had systematically isolated Isabella from her friends and family, drained her personal savings, and turned his penthouse into a high-tech prison. When she finally tried to pack a bag and leave, he had beaten her brutally and threatened to destroy her parents' small bakery if she ever tried to escape again.
"I managed to slip out through the service elevator when his private security was changing shifts," Isabella cried, staring into her coffee mug. "But Vicente won't stop looking. He views me as his property. He will tear this entire coast apart to find me."

Valeria reached across the table, placing her hand firmly over Isabella’s trembling fingers.
"Let him try," Valeria said, her eyes hardening into unbreakable steel. "Vicente Castillo is about to learn a very painful lesson. You are not his property, Isabella. And this house is a fortress."
