Chapter 23 - Aunt Elena's Secret

Daniel returned to the coastal house with the grim news. The impending court order was a legal guillotine hanging over their heads. If a corrupt judge signed the mandate, armed bailiffs would arrive to take Sofia away.
"We run," Valeria said frantically, pacing the living room with the baby in her arms. "We pack our bags tonight and cross the border. We disappear."
"Ricardo has half the federal police on his payroll," a quiet voice interrupted from the doorway.
Aunt Elena stepped into the house, shaking off her wet umbrella. The elderly woman, who had helped save Valeria from the bottom of the pool, looked exhausted but determined. She carried a heavy, locked leather briefcase.
"You cannot outrun Ricardo, Valeria," Aunt Elena said softly. "He has eyes everywhere. If you run, he will frame Daniel for kidnapping and use it to justify his custody grab."
"Then what do we do, Elena?" Daniel asked, frustration bleeding into his voice. "He bought the judge. The legal system is rigged."
"You fight fire with an inferno," Elena replied, setting the briefcase on the coffee table. She pulled a small key from her necklace and unlocked it.
Inside were stacks of yellowed, highly classified corporate documents.
"Teresa wasn't the only one keeping secrets," Elena explained, a fiery spark returning to her old eyes. "Ricardo embezzled millions from a powerful cartel in Sinaloa fifteen years ago to fund his European expansion. He pinned the theft on a lower-level executive who was murdered. These ledgers prove Ricardo is the true thief."

Valeria looked at the documents, realizing the magnitude of the weapon they had just been handed. "If the cartel sees this, they will hunt Ricardo down."
"Exactly," Daniel said, a predatory smile crossing his face. "We don't need to win in court. We just need to introduce him to his own ghosts."
