Chapter 13 - The Snag

The firefighters grabbed Valeria by the shoulders, pulling her limp, heavy body out of the water and onto the terracotta tiles. She was completely unresponsive, her lips blue.

"Start CPR! Now!" a paramedic yelled, dropping to his knees beside her and beginning chest compressions.

Daniel treaded water in the tiny, dark gap, watching the paramedics work on his wife. He prepared to hoist himself up.

But as he lifted his arms to grab the edge of the pool deck, a terrifying, violent jerk yanked him backward.

The statue they had broken the bolt from had been precariously balanced on the edge of a deep underwater drop-off. The violent thrashing had finally dislodged it. The massive marble structure tipped over, sliding heavily down into the deepest, darkest trench of the pool's architectural design.

The heavy iron chain, which was still wrapped loosely around Daniel’s leg from when he secured it during the swim up, instantly pulled tight.

"Daniel!" Aunt Elena screamed, pointing down at him.

The immense weight of the falling marble statue ripped Daniel completely under the surface in a fraction of a second.

The firefighters lunged forward, thrusting their hands into the water, desperately trying to grab his flailing arms.

They missed by mere inches.
