Chapter 7 - The Shadows in the Ledger

The morning sun brought no warmth to the Thorne estate. Julian hadn't slept a wink, spending the night sitting in a leather armchair by Lily’s bed, watching her chest rise and fall. When dawn finally broke, he called his most trusted asset: Marcus Vance, a private investigator who specialized in corporate espionage and domestic nightmares. They met in Julian’s soundproof home office. "I need everything you can find on Elena," Julian instructed, sliding a dossier across the mahogany desk. "Every bank account, every deleted email, every whisper from her past."
Marcus flipped through the basic background check Julian had run before the wedding. It was flawless—too flawless. "You think she married you for the money? That's the oldest story in Los Angeles, Julian."
"It's more than money," Julian said, his voice rough from exhaustion. "She looked at my daughter like she was an obstacle to be eradicated. I need to know if she has a history of this. I need to know exactly who I let into my house."
By mid-afternoon, Marcus called with the first crack in Elena's perfect armor. The prestigious boarding school in Switzerland she claimed to have attended had no record of her. The charity she ostensibly managed before they met was a shell corporation registered in the Cayman Islands. But the most chilling discovery was her previous marriage.

"She was married before, Julian," Marcus revealed over the encrypted line. "A wealthy real estate developer in Chicago. He died in a tragic, highly convenient boating accident exactly one week after altering his will to name her the sole beneficiary. His children from his first marriage were completely cut out, sent to boarding schools, and legally estranged."
Julian felt a cold sweat break out on his neck. Elena wasn't just a gold digger. She was a predator who systematically isolated her targets and removed their heirs. Lily wasn't just in the way of a peaceful marriage; she was in the way of a lethal succession plan.
