Chapter 3: The Art of the Deception

The day of the "departure," Julian left for the airport—or so Elena thought. He actually checked into a luxury hotel three blocks away, where his legal team was waiting.

Elena didn't wait. By noon, she had the local sheriff, a corrupt magistrate she had on her payroll, and a "doctor" at the front door, ready to execute the incapacity clause.

"I'm so sorry, Elena," the magistrate said, walking into the foyer where Elena stood with Lily. "But we have a court order signed by the family."

"It's for his own good," Elena said, feigning tears.

Suddenly, the front door swung open. Julian walked in, followed by his legal team and, surprisingly, the Chief of Police.

"You’re right, Elena," Julian said, his voice echoing through the foyer. "It is for the best."

Elena froze. "Julian? You... you were supposed to be in Tokyo."

"I was," Julian said. "But I decided to stop by the District Attorney’s office on the way to the gate."

The Chief of Police stepped forward, holding a thick file. "Elena Vance Thorne, you are under arrest for conspiracy to commit medical fraud, attempted kidnapping, and embezzlement."

The color drained from Elena’s face. She looked at the magistrate, who was already backing away, his own arrest imminent. She looked at Julian, who stood firm, his hand resting protectively on Lily’s shoulder. She had bet everything on his weakness, never realizing that his love for his daughter was the one thing that made him invincible.
