Chapter 1 - The Threshold of Betrayal

The house felt different after that night. Julian was a man of business; he knew when he was being played, and he knew how to win. He didn't confront Elena. He didn't ask questions. Instead, he went to his study, the one room in the house Elena famously hated because it was locked with a biometric scanner she couldn't bypass.
He spent the next forty-eight hours in a blur of surveillance. He checked the home servers, the cloud backups, and the hidden cameras he had installed months ago—not to spy on Elena, but for general security. He found the audio files.
They were recordings of Elena speaking to her legal counsel. Not a divorce attorney. An estate attorney.
Julian pulled a hidden floor safe from beneath his desk, punched in the code, and retrieved a document he had found stashed in the back of the library months ago but had ignored, thinking it was a work contract. He read it now with new eyes.
It was an Incapacity Clause. It was a legal document designed to declare Julian "mentally unfit" to handle his own financial affairs, citing "stress-induced lapses in judgment." If signed by two paid-off doctors, Elena would gain full power of attorney over the Thorne empire.

The motive was clear: she didn't just want the money. She wanted the control. And Lily? Lily was the obstacle in the trust fund structure. The document included a clause to place the child in a "private therapeutic boarding school" in Switzerland—a place from which she might never return to the family life she knew.
Julian sat in the dark, the paper trembling in his hand. This wasn't a marriage. It was a hostile takeover.
