Chapter 23 - The Fall of the Queen

The flashing lights of the SWAT vehicles illuminated the estate grounds like a chaotic strobe light. Elena stared down from the hovering helicopter, the realization of her ultimate failure twisting her features into a mask of pure desperation. She had gambled everything on this brutal extraction, and she had lost.
"Abortion the mission! Pull up!" she screamed at the pilot, frantically hitting the side of the cockpit.
But Julian was not going to let her escape into the night again. He broke cover from behind the HVAC unit, ignoring the remaining mercenary who was limping toward the access hatch. Julian sprinted across the open roof, raising his weapon toward the helicopter’s vulnerable tail rotor. He didn't need to hit Elena; he just needed to ground the aircraft.
Julian fired his last two shells in rapid succession. The heavy buckshot slammed into the tail rotor’s complex mechanics. A horrific, grinding screech of tearing metal echoed over the estate as the tail rotor catastrophically failed. The helicopter instantly lost its stabilizing force, spinning wildly out of control.

Elena shrieked in absolute terror, clinging to the safety harness as the chopper violently plummeted toward the expansive front lawn. It crashed with a deafening, earth-shattering crunch, entirely missing the house but obliterating the manicured gardens. A massive plume of black smoke billowed into the night sky.
Julian stood on the edge of the roof, breathing heavily, watching the wreckage. Federal agents and SWAT teams instantly swarmed the downed helicopter with fire extinguishers and drawn weapons. They pulled the pilot and a badly injured, semi-conscious Elena from the mangled wreckage. She was bloodied, defeated, and securely handcuffed in the wet grass. The monster had finally been dragged into the light, permanently caged.
