Chapter 20 - Whispers of the Underworld

|

Three months later, the sun rose brightly over Manhattan.

In a private wing of Manhattan General Hospital, Nell Whitaker took her very first unassisted steps across the room, leaning on a walker, her face beaming with pure joy as Adeline cheered and held her hands.

Standing by the window, watching the sisters laugh, was Enzo, wearing a sharp black suit, the silver wedding band on his left hand glinting in the morning light.

Everything seemed peaceful. The Whitaker family was restored, Adeline was now the mistress of the Marquetti estate, and Alfonso was resting comfortably under the best medical care money could buy.

However, miles away across the Hudson River, in a dimly lit warehouse on the docks of New Jersey, a meeting was taking place in total secrecy.

Silvio Reneri stood beside a shadowy figure sitting at a desk—a representative from the Chicago Syndicate, New York’s deadliest rival.

"Enzo Marquetti married a street nurse," Silvio sneered, slamming a photograph of Adeline onto the desk. "He made himself weak. He's soft."

The shadowy figure picked up the photograph, studying Adeline's soft face.

"A Don who has a heart is a Don with a target on his chest," the man replied, his voice dripping with malice. "If we take the nurse... we take New York."

Back at the hospital, Adeline walked over to Enzo, slipping her hand smoothly into his. She felt the heavy, solid shape of the brass compass resting safely in his coat pocket.

She looked up into his dark eyes, sensing a subtle shift in the air—a quiet storm brewing on the horizon.

"Enzo?" Adeline asked softly. "Is everything alright?"

Enzo wrapped his arm gently around her waist, looking out over the city skyline, knowing that the real battle to protect his new family had only just begun.

"Everything is fine, my love," Enzo whispered, his eyes hardening with lethal resolve. "As long as I have you... we are ready for whatever comes next."
