Chapter 15 - The Gathering of the Nine

|
By five-thirty that evening, the Long Island estate was surrounded by black luxury sedans.
The locked room was packed to capacity. All nine senior captains sat around the long mahogany table, their faces grim and expectant. Standing along the perimeter wall were the families of the three rejected heiresses—Shipping Magnate Rossi, Judge Vance, and Commissioner Miller—all present to witness Enzo’s formal downfall.
At the head of the table, Bruno Castellano sat with a broad, triumphant smile, adjusting his gold cufflinks.
"It is six o'clock," Bruno announced loudly, knocking his knuckles against the table. "Enzo Marquetti turns thirty-five today. Under Clause Forty-Two of our sacred family charter, he was required to present a legal bride from an allied family to secure our bloodline."
Bruno stood up, looking around the room at the solemn captains.
"As we all know, Enzo has rejected every suitable match offered to him," Bruno continued, his voice ringing with theatrical sorrow. "He has shown a complete disregard for our traditions and our political future. Therefore, I move that the council officially convene to strip Enzo of his leadership and elect a new Don!"
Several captains nodded in agreement, whispering among themselves.
Enzo sat quietly at the far end of the table, his arms crossed, his face completely unreadable.
"You speak of the charter, Uncle Bruno," Enzo said softly, his voice easily cutting through the whispers. "But you forget one fundamental detail."
Bruno frowned. "What detail?"
"The charter states that the head of the household makes the selection," Enzo said calmly. "And as I informed you last week, my grandfather, Don Alfonso, holds that authority."

Bruno scoffed loudly. "Alfonso is on his deathbed! He hasn't left his room in days! He is in no condition to make decisions for this family!"
Right on cue, the double doors of the locked room swung wide open.
