Chapter 17 - The Heart of a Protector

|

Alfonso raised one thin, trembling hand. Instantly, the entire room went silent. Not even Bruno dared to speak over him.

"Three women walked into my bedroom this week," Alfonso said slowly, his deep voice carrying the full weight of his eighty-four years.

He pointed a finger at Vivian Rossi. "The first looked at my ledger and saw only numbers and corporate mergers."

He pointed at Isabella Vance. "The second looked at her father and saw only fear and obedience."

He pointed at Clarissa Miller. "The third looked at my windows and saw only a mirror to admire herself."

Alfonso turned his wheelchair slightly, looking up at Adeline, who was standing frozen in shock.

"Only one person walked into my room, looked at a dying old man, and saw a human being in pain," Alfonso declared, his eyes shining with profound emotion. "Only one person washed my face without asking who I was, adjusted my blankets without demanding a reward, and carries the true soul of a protector."

Alfonso looked back at the stunned council of captains.

"The Marquetti family does not need more money!" Alfonso thundered, his voice echoing off the wood panelling. "We do not need more corrupt politicians or corporate docks! We need a leader who understands what a human life is worth—because without that, our bloodline will rot from the inside out!"

Alfonso looked directly at his grandson.

"Enzo. I have made my choice. This is the woman who will stand beside you."

Adeline gasped, her hands flying to her mouth. "What...? No... Mr. Marquetti, I... I'm just a nurse..."

Enzo slowly stood up from his chair. His dark eyes met Adeline's trembling gaze, holding it with absolute serenity.

"My grandfather has spoken," Enzo said softly. "And his choice is mine."
