Chapter 19 - The Receipt and the Compass

|

An hour later, the estate had cleared. The stunned captains had departed, the heiresses had left in disgrace, and a quiet stillness returned to the mansion.

Adeline stood out on the stone terrace, watching the cool night breeze ripple across the ocean water. Her mind was spinning, completely overwhelmed by everything she had just witnessed.

Soft footsteps sounded behind her. Enzo walked out onto the terrace, holding a warm cashmere coat, which he gently draped around her shoulders.

"I apologize for the madness inside," Enzo said softly. "My world is... violent and complicated."

Adeline looked up at him, her brown eyes wide with lingering shock. "Mr. Marquetti... why did your grandfather pick me? I have no money, no influence. I can't help you rule an empire."

Enzo reached into his jacket pocket and pulled out an official document, handing it to her.

Adeline unfolded the paper under the terrace light. It was an official receipt from Manhattan General Hospital, stamped in bold red ink:

PAID IN FULL — $185,000. Nell Whitaker’s Spinal Reconstruction Surgery scheduled for Tuesday, 8:00 AM. Private Rehabilitation Suite Reserved.

Tears instantly flooded Adeline’s eyes. She stared at the paper, her breath hitching in her throat, before looking up at the tall, scarred man standing before her.

"You... you paid for Nell's surgery?" she whispered, tears spilling down her cheeks.

"You sacrificed your sleep, your health, and your youth to protect your sister," Enzo said gently, reaching out and brushing a tear from her cheek with his thumb. "You fold paper cranes for sick children because you believe kindness matters in dark places."

He stepped closer to her, his dark eyes shining with an intensity she had never seen before.

"My grandfather didn't pick you because you are poor, Adeline," Enzo whispered softly. "He picked you because you are the only person in New York who cannot be bought. And I agree with him."

Adeline held the receipt tightly against her chest, her heart beating wildly. "I don't know how to be a mafia Don's wife, Enzo."

Enzo reached into his pocket one last time and pulled out the old brass compass. He placed it gently into Adeline’s hand, closing her fingers around the cool metal.

"You don't have to be a mafia wife," Enzo promised, his voice filled with unbreakable certainty. "You just have to be my wife. And whenever I lose my way in the dark... you use this to remind me who we protect."

Adeline looked down at the solid brass compass resting in her hand, then up at Enzo. A quiet, deep peace washed over her, replacing the years of exhaustion.

She smiled softly through her tears. "Alright, Enzo. Let's go home."
