Chapter 14 - The File on St. Bridget

|

At 4:00 AM, Enzo sat behind his heavy desk in the mansion's study.

Marco, his most trusted lieutenant, stood across from him, placing two thick folders on the desk.

"Everything you asked for, boss," Marco reported in a low voice.

Enzo opened the first folder. It contained the complete medical history of Nell Whitaker, including X-rays, surgeon evaluations, and the urgent letter from Manhattan General Hospital regarding the unpaid $185,000 surgical fee.

"She's been working eighty hours a week between St. Bridget and here," Marco explained. "Every penny she earns goes into a high-yield savings account for her sister's operation. She doesn't buy new clothes, she doesn't go out, she sleeps on the subway."

Enzo stared at the document, his thumb tracing the name Adeline Whitaker.

"And the second folder?" Enzo asked.

Marco’s expression turned stern. "It’s just as you suspected. Bruno has been skimming from the Bensonhurst collection ledgers for over three years. Over two million dollars redirected to a bank in the Cayman Islands. He was using Silvio to do the heavy lifting."

Enzo closed both folders with a sharp snap.

"He violated the house rules, stole from our people, and tried to manipulate my grandfather’s dying days," Enzo said, his voice dropping to a dangerous, icy murmur.

"The council meeting is set for six PM today, Enzo," Marco reminded him nervously. "Bruno has already rallied four of the senior captains to his side. They think you're coming to the table empty-handed without a bride."

Enzo stood up, walking over to the window as the first light of dawn broke over the ocean horizon. He pulled the brass compass from his pocket, turning it over in his hand.

"Go to Manhattan General Hospital," Enzo ordered Marco. "Speak to the chief of orthopedic surgery. And make sure everything is prepared for six o'clock."
