Chapter 32 - The Weight of Silence

|

By the following morning, the rainstorm had passed, leaving behind a crisp, crystal-clear blue sky over Manhattan.

A sleek black limousine pulled up to the grand marble steps of the historic First National Bank building on 5th Avenue. Two broad-shouldered security guards in dark suits stepped out first, scanning the busy sidewalk before opening the rear passenger door.

Lorenzo DeLuca stepped out, dressed in an immaculate dark navy suit, holding an Italian leather briefcase. He turned and offered his hand to Isabella, who emerged wearing an elegant cream-colored trench coat, her dark hair pinned back neatly.

They walked side by side through the soaring brass doors of the bank, their footfalls echoing across the polished granite floor of the main lobby.

A senior bank vice president, alerted to their arrival by a federal court order secured overnight by Rachel’s law firm, hurried forward to meet them.

"Mr. and Mrs. DeLuca," the executive bowed politely, his voice hushed and respectful. "Everything has been prepared in the lower vault as requested by the federal magistrate."

"Lead the way," Lorenzo commanded calmly.

They descended a wide marble staircase into the subterranean depths of the building, passing through two heavy steel security gates until they reached the ultra-secure safety deposit vault.

The vault custodian led them down a long aisle lined with thousands of shining silver deposit boxes. He stopped at Box #412.

Isabella stepped forward, her heart beating steadily against her ribs. She pulled the heavy brass key from her purse and handed it to the custodian.

The custodian inserted his master key into the left lock, then inserted Claire’s brass key into the right lock. With a heavy, satisfying clunk, the lock tumblers disengaged.

The custodian pulled the long metal drawer out and placed it carefully on an mahogany viewing table in the center of the room.

"I will give you privacy," the executive said, bowing before stepping outside the vault doors.

Lorenzo and Isabella stood alone in the quiet vault, staring down at the silver box.

Isabella reached out and lifted the hinged lid.
