Chapter 13 - ISABELLA AND LORENZO RETURNED TO THE OLD TRAIN STATION TO SEE THE PLACE WHERE THE IMPOSSIBLE STORY BEGAN

Twenty years after Emma saw Isabella, freight district changed.

Warehouses became lofts.

Coffee shops.

Art studios.

Old track remained behind fencing.

The particular building was demolished after structural condemnation.

Only concrete foundation.

Isabella suggested visit.

Lorenzo frowned.

“Why?”

“I don’t know.”

“Good reason.”

“Do you want?”

“No.”

“Do you want to come anyway?”

“Yes.”

Accurate.

They drove quietly.

No media.

Mason retired but security team discreet.

Isabella stood where camera utility box had been.

Wind.

Train in distance.

“I slept there three nights.”

Lorenzo looked.

“After farmhouse?”

“Later.”

“Why?”

“Soup kitchen nearby.”

“Did you know home was less than hour?”

“Yes.”

That still hurt.

“I almost called.”

“When?”

“Second night.”

“What stopped?”

“Gray SUV parked across.”

“Was it them?”

“I don’t know.”

She looked.

“That’s worst.”

“Not knowing.”

She had to choose with incomplete data.

If wrong, Emma.

Sophia.

She stayed.

Lorenzo swallowed.

“I would have wanted you to call.”

“I know.”

“But you were right not to risk them.”

She looked surprised.

Years ago he could not say.

Now.

He continued:

“I hate answer.”

“I know.”

“Still true.”

She held his hand.

They walked.

A mural depicted trains.

No trace.

Isabella found broken fence section maybe replaced.

She laughed.

“Emma was right there.”

“Three years old.”

“She saw Bruno before me.”

“Probably because he was prettier.”

“Definitely.”

They sat bench.

Lorenzo asked:

“Do you ever wish she had yelled?”

“Who?”

“Emma.”

“If she saw you and yelled name.”

Isabella thought.

“No.”

“Why?”

“I might have run faster.”

They smiled.

Hope depended on tiny decisions.

Sophia letting Emma speak later.

Lorenzo not dismissing.

Mason saying wait.

Rachel doing proper.

A chain.

No destiny.

They invited Emma to join later? Not same day maybe. Emma had her own life.

Isabella texted photo of tracks.

Emma replied:

That place looks nicer now.

Then:

Bruno would hate coffee shops.

Correct.

On drive home, Lorenzo said:

“The world thinks this is where story began.”

“It began before.”

“Claire invoices.”

“Vincent choices.”

“Our systems.”

“Yes.”

“And my decision not to tell you.”

He looked.

“Do you regret?”

“Every version of answer hurts.”

She might regret not telling because risk, but if told maybe evidence destroyed.

“I regret we were marriage where I thought I couldn’t bring suspicion safely.”

That landed.

“Not same as blaming.”

“I know.”

“Do you think we’re different now?”

“Yes.”

He smiled.

“Why?”

“You ask before booking Sicily.”

“Once.”

“Trauma requires repetition.”

He laughed.

They returned estate.

Study.

Photos.

Bent collar.

Funeral program archived.

No secrecy.

Emma later came for dinner with partner.

She looked at train photo.

“I barely remember.”

Isabella:

“That’s good.”

“Really?”

“Yes.”

“You were child.”

Emma said:

“I remember rabbit.”

“Where is it?”

“My mom has it.”

Lorenzo:

“Tell her estate will purchase.”

Emma laughed.

“No.”

He smiled.

Accepted.

At dinner they told stories not kidnapping.

Bad school photo.

Bruno stealing roast.

Sophia accidentally shrinking Lorenzo’s sweater? Maybe.

Life had grown around trauma.

That was point.

After Emma left, Isabella stood study.

“Do you still think I’m going to disappear?”

Lorenzo thought.

“Sometimes.”

“Me too.”

“What?”

“Sometimes I wake and think house might be farmhouse.”

He took hand only after she extended.

“Less?”

“Yes.”

“Me too.”

Less.

The word once hurt.

Now comfort.

Healing rarely no fear.

Less.

More choice.

More truth.

May you like

More ordinary days.

Enough.
