Chapter 22 - Power as Restraint

Lorenzo reached up and placed his hand over Isabella’s as she held his face.
"Do you think I changed enough, Isabella?" he asked quietly.
Isabella considered the question thoughtfully, looking into the eyes of the man who had torn down empires to protect her.
"No," she replied smoothly.
Lorenzo blinked, staring at her in mild shock.
Isabella burst into a rich, warm laugh. "No one changes enough, Lorenzo. What kind of impossible standard are you holding yourself to?"
Lorenzo rolled his eyes, a fond smirk playing on his lips. "An accurate one, preferably."
Isabella’s laughter softened into a look of deep, unconditional devotion.
"You changed, Lorenzo," she whispered softly. "You changed in the ways that mattered most. I trust you. Completely."
Lorenzo felt a quiet warmth expand in his chest. I trust you. Those three words meant far more to him than any declaration of fear or obedience ever could.
He looked down at their joined hands. Once upon a time, his entire worldview had been constructed around the belief that total control was the only mechanism that could protect the people he loved.
Now, after decades of living through the fire, he understood the truth: true safety required exits.
It required an environment where people felt safe enough to speak. It required systems that were capable of being challenged without triggering violence. It required wives who had the power to say no, employees who could report wrongdoing without fear of retaliation, and children who were empowered to speak impossible things when they saw something wrong.
That was true strength.
The evening air turned crisp as night fell over the estate. Isabella stood up from the bench, brushing off her dress.
"Dinner," she announced.
Lorenzo raised an eyebrow, staying seated. "What are we having?"
"Pasta," she said.
"Are you cooking?"
"No," she smiled brightly.
Lorenzo frowned. "Then who is?"
"You are."
Lorenzo’s frown deepened. "Isabella, I have staff. We have people whose job it is to cook."
May you like
She looked down at him with an amused smirk. "You have hands, Lorenzo. Use them."
