Chapter 30 - To the Questions

Lorenzo immediately reached into his pocket, pulled out his pocket knife, and carefully sliced through the plastic evidence seal surrounding the metal tin.
"Claire wrote this," Isabella whispered, her fingers trembling slightly as she touched the faded handwriting on the tag. "This was inside her personal locker at the shipping depot... the one the police never managed to locate."
"Vincent’s lawyers suppressed the depot records during the preliminary hearings," Lorenzo remembered, his eyes turning cold. "They claimed the locker didn't exist."
Isabella took the small brass lock between her fingers. Time and rust had weakened the mechanism over the decades. Lorenzo gently took the lock, applied a firm twist with his heavy pliers, and snapped the rusted shackle with a loud clack.
He lifted the lid of the metal tin.
Inside sat three items: a small leather-bound diary, a heavy brass key stamped with a three-digit number, and a sealed white envelope addressed simply: For Isabella.
Isabella reached in and picked up the envelope. The paper was dry and brittle with age, but the seal remained completely unbroken.
"She left this for me," Isabella murmured, tears welling in her eyes as she held the letter against her chest. "Before Vincent took her... she knew what was coming."
Lorenzo stepped closer, placing a comforting hand on the small of her back. "Do you want me to leave the room?"
Isabella shook her head firmly. "No. Stay with me. Please."
She carefully slid her thumb under the flap of the envelope, pulling out two folded pages written in blue ink.
Isabella began to read out loud, her voice steadying as she gave life to the words of the brave woman who had died in her place so many years ago:
"Dearest Isabella,
If you are reading this, it means my attempt to expose Vincent’s maritime accounts has failed, and he has moved against me. I know you tried to help me. I know you risked your own safety to give me access to the compliance files.
Do not feel guilty for what happens to me. I chose this path because I could no longer live quietly while evil men built empires on stolen lives.
Inside this tin is the key to Safe Deposit Box #412 at the First National Bank on 5th Avenue. Inside that box, I have secured the original master ledgers that Vincent hid from the federal auditors—the ledgers that detail the hidden silent partners behind his entire operation."
Isabella stopped reading, her breath catching in her throat.
May you like
Lorenzo’s eyes widened in profound shock. "Silent partners?"
