Chapter 26 - Ghosts in the Sunlight

The estate settled into a profound, tranquil silence as the midnight hours approached.
Lorenzo lay awake beside Isabella, listening to the steady, rhythmic sound of her breathing. She was fast asleep, one hand resting lightly over his chest. For years, this quiet rhythm had been his anchor—the proof that the nightmare was truly over.
Yet, as the wind rustled the high oak branches outside, Lorenzo found his mind drifting back to the archive box in his study down the hall.
He gently lifted Isabella’s hand, slipped out from under the heavy covers, and pulled on his velvet robe. Barefoot, he padded silently down the grand staircase, his shadow stretching across the polished marble floors.
He opened the study door and stepped inside without turning on the main overhead lights. The silver glow of the full moon flooded through the floor-to-ceiling windows, illuminating the third photograph on his desk.
Lorenzo walked over and sat down in his heavy leather armchair. He picked up the framed picture, his thumb gently tracing the glass over Emma’s smile.
He remembered the exact moment Emma had walked into his office all those years ago. She had been so small that her feet dangled inches above the carpet when she sat in the heavy leather guest chair. She had been terrified of his stoic demeanor, yet her determination to help "the sad lady behind the tracks" had outweighed her fear.
"You were so brave, little girl," Lorenzo murmured to the quiet room.
He set the frame back down and opened the archival box sitting on the bottom shelf. He reached past the yellowed funeral program and lifted the heavy brown leather dog collar from the velvet lining.
The metal ring attached to the buckle was bent at a strange, thirty-degree angle—a permanent scar from the day Bruno had attempted to leap over an iron security gate as a pup.
That crooked ring had been the precise anomaly that unraveled Vincent’s grand masterpiece of deception. Vincent had managed to bribe coroners, forge dental records, swap medical files, and intimidate witnesses. He had planned for every single high-level variable.
But he hadn't planned on a stray dog escaping a hidden facility. And he certainly hadn't planned on a seven-year-old girl noticing a crooked metal ring on its collar.
Lorenzo held the cold metal ring between his fingers, realizing once again how fragile human destiny truly was.
"Lorenzo?"

A soft voice broke the silence. Lorenzo turned to see Isabella standing in the doorway, wrapped in a silk robe, her dark hair falling loosely around her shoulders.
