Chapter 9 - INSIDE THE HEDGE.

Marcus walked toward the hedge with the baby held securely against his chest.
Victoria followed one step.
Then stopped.
“Marcus.”
He ignored her.
Elena remained near the pool, bruised and soaked, watching him.
The white object became clearer with every step.
A security camera.
Small.
High-definition.
Mounted deep enough inside the hedge to be unobtrusive, but aimed directly across the pool terrace.
Marcus stopped beneath it.
The red recording light blinked steadily.
He looked toward the pool.
Then back toward the camera.
Its angle covered the stroller’s original position.
The coping.
The water.
The section of patio where Victoria had been standing.
Marcus turned slowly.
Victoria’s face had gone pale.
“It’s probably not recording.”
Marcus looked at the red light.
Then at her.
“You just said you didn’t know what she was pointing at.”
Victoria’s mouth opened.
No answer came.
Elena lowered her arm from exhaustion.
Her eyes filled again.
Marcus looked toward her bruised face.
A new kind of horror entered his expression.

He had struck the woman who had pulled his child from the water.
And somewhere inside that camera was the answer to exactly who had pushed the stroller.
