Chapter 5 - THAT’S MY SON.

Elena remained on the ground.
Her face stung where Marcus had struck her.
Water pooled beneath her soaked uniform.
“No,” she whispered.
Marcus ignored her and reached for the baby.
Elena hesitated.
Every instinct in her body wanted to keep holding the child she had just pulled from the pool.
But Marcus was his father.
She carefully let him take the infant.
Marcus immediately pressed the baby against his chest.
The child coughed softly and cried into his charcoal shirt.
Marcus’s fury shifted into fear.
He held the infant tighter.
Victoria moved close to his side.
Elena watched her.
Victoria wrapped one hand around Marcus’s arm.
Her fake tears returned.
“She tried to kill your son…”
Elena’s eyes widened.
Marcus looked down at the baby rather than at her.
Victoria leaned nearer to his ear.
“I saw everything.”
Elena shook her head.
“You saw everything because you did it.”
Victoria’s head snapped toward her.
Marcus looked between them.
“What?”
Victoria immediately cried harder.
“She’s lying because she knows you caught her.”
Elena tried to push herself upright.
Pain flashed through her bruised shoulder.
“No. Please. I jumped in after him.”

Marcus stared at her.
For the first time, certainty flickered.
