Chapter 18 - THE RECKONING

“I’d rather be at the bottom of a pool than spend a single second being as pathetic as you,” Elena spat, her voice ringing clear and strong through the quiet diner.
Victoria’s face twisted in rage. “Die!”
As Victoria shifted her aim toward Elena’s heart, Elena didn't flinch. With one swift, powerful motion, she grabbed the glass coffee pot and hurled the boiling liquid straight into the faces of the two armed men standing beside Victoria.
The men screamed in pain, clutching their scalded faces as dark coffee blinded them.
In that split second of chaos, Marcus charged forward like a storm. He tackled Victoria to the floor before she could pull the trigger. The pistol clattered across the linoleum tiles, sliding under a nearby table.
Elena sprinted toward the booth, scooping baby Leo into her arms and holding him tight against her chest, shielding him with her own body as the sounds of struggle echoed through the diner.
Outside, sirens suddenly blared, tearing through the morning air. Flashing red and blue lights illuminated the diner’s glass windows as half a dozen police cruisers and Marcus’s security team surrounded the building.
The heavy front doors were kicked open, and armed officers poured into the room, shouting commands.
Within seconds, Victoria and her hired thugs were pinned to the ground in handcuffs. As the officers dragged Victoria toward the door, she thrashed wildly, screaming curses at the top of her lungs, her dark hair tangled and filthy against her face.

Marcus stood up, panting heavily, a cut bleeding near his hairline where he had hit the floor. He didn't check his wound. He turned immediately toward Elena and his son.
Elena was sitting on the floor behind the counter, holding little Leo tight, whispering gentle words into his soft hair while the baby rested peacefully against her heart."""
