Chapter 3 - I SAVED HIM.

Elena collapsed onto the limestone tiles.

Water poured from her hair and navy uniform.

The baby lay against her chest, coughing and crying weakly.

Elena rolled onto one hip and pulled him close.

“I saved him!”

The words came out between gasping breaths.

She laughed once through tears, almost unable to believe the infant was crying.

That cry meant air.

Life.

She pressed her cheek against his wet head.

Behind her, Victoria stood several yards away.

Her face no longer carried a smirk.

She was staring toward the mansion doors.

Elena did not notice.

She was too focused on the child.

The baby coughed again.

Elena supported his head carefully.

“You’re okay. You’re okay.”

Then the French doors burst open.

Marcus charged onto the terrace.

His charcoal shirt was already rolled at the sleeves, his entire body driving forward with alarm.

He saw the soaked infant.

He saw Elena on the ground.

He saw Victoria standing nearby.

“What happened?”

Victoria reacted first.

She stumbled toward him with both hands raised, tears appearing instantly.

Her voice became a scream.

“She pushed him in!”

Elena looked up.

Her relief vanished.
