Chapter 1 - THE STROLLER AT THE WATER.

Victoria stood alone beside the illuminated pool with one hand resting on the handle of the dark gray stroller.
Inside, the six-month-old baby shifted softly in his white cotton onesie.
Turquoise light rippled across Victoria’s emerald satin gown. Beyond the limestone terrace, tall hedges blocked the night, while warm light poured from the mansion’s French doors.
Victoria looked toward the house.
No one was coming.
Her red nails tightened around the stroller handle.
Then her expression changed.
A small, cruel smile.
Without hesitation, she pushed.
The stroller rolled across the stone coping.
One wheel crossed the edge.
Then the entire stroller tipped forward.
It crashed into the deep pool with a violent splash.
The baby’s cry disappeared beneath the water.
Victoria remained standing.
She did not reach down.
She watched the stroller sink.
Then running footsteps exploded across the patio.
“Elena!”
The maid sprinted into view.
Her eyes found the stroller beneath the water.
She did not stop to remove her shoes.
She threw herself headfirst into the pool.

Victoria’s smile vanished.
And Elena disappeared beneath the surface.
