Chapter 10 - WHAT ARE YOU POINTING AT?

The pool terrace had gone unnaturally quiet.
Only the infant’s weak crying and the soft churn of the pool filter remained.
Marcus stood beneath the hedge camera holding his son.
Victoria stayed several feet behind him.
Elena remained on the stone floor where his slap had knocked her down.
The red light continued blinking.
Marcus looked first at the camera.
Then at Elena.
Her wet hair clung to her face.
Her cheek was swollen.
Her hands were scraped.
She had risked herself in the pool before anyone else arrived.
Victoria stood dry in her emerald gown.
Marcus’s certainty collapsed under the weight of those details.
He looked down at the baby.
Then back at the camera.
“What are you pointing at?”
Elena raised her shaking finger once more.
Marcus followed it directly to the white security camera hidden among the leaves.
Victoria took one slow step backward.
Marcus heard the heel scrape against stone.
He turned.
For the first time, her expression contained no fake grief.
Only panic.
Marcus stared at her.
Then at Elena.
Then at the red recording light.
No footage played.
No confession came.
The stroller remained underwater.
The baby remained alive in Marcus’s arms.
And the woman he had just struck remained bruised on the patio after insisting she had saved him.
Marcus’s face darkened with realization.
The camera blinked again.
Still recording.
May you like
Still aimed directly at the pool.
And the scene ended with Victoria staring at that red light as if it had become the most dangerous object on the estate.
