Chapter 6 - The Subtle Shifts
The early days of Vanessa Hart’s integration into the Bennett household were a masterclass in calculated charm. She was a powerhouse in public relations, a woman who knew precisely how to read a room and mold it to her advantage. To Lucas, she appeared as a breath of fresh air—a vibrant, organized force that brought life back into a home that had been holding its breath for two years. But to six-year-old Lily, the changes were jarring, hidden beneath a veneer of bright smiles and expensive gifts.
It started with the small things. The mismatched, colorful artwork Lily had proudly taped to the refrigerator slowly disappeared, replaced by sleek, minimalist magnetic calendars and imported Italian menus. When Lucas asked about the finger paintings, Vanessa smoothly explained that she had carefully archived them in a special portfolio to "preserve" them, rather than letting them get ruined in the kitchen. It sounded so reasonable, so thoughtful, that Lucas didn't notice the way Lily’s shoulders slumped when she looked at the bare stainless steel.
Then came the subtle shifts in routine. Sunday mornings had always been for Lucas and Lily—burning pancakes, watching cartoons in their pajamas, and building sprawling forts out of the living room cushions. Vanessa didn't ban the tradition; she simply modified it. She began scheduling brunch reservations at exclusive country clubs, citing the importance of Lucas networking with potential investors.

"And Lily looks so much more presentable in this lovely outfit, don't you think? We are the Bennett family, after all. We have an image to uphold."
Lucas, blinded by the relief of no longer carrying the weight of the world alone, saw a woman trying to elevate his family. He didn't see the way Vanessa's manicured hand firmly ushered Lily out of the way, or the cold, assessing look she gave the little girl when Lucas turned his back. The house was becoming a pristine magazine cover, and Lily was rapidly becoming a prop.
