Chapter 21 - The Passing Years
The years moved with a swift, unrelenting grace. Lucas watched Lily grow from a quiet, cautious little girl into a fiercely intelligent, compassionate teenager. She inherited Grace’s kindness and Lucas’s unyielding determination.
Throughout those years, Lucas dated occasionally, but he never rushed. He brought a woman home only when he was absolutely certain of her character. He never compromised on the standard Grace had set.
When Lily was sixteen, Lucas met a woman named Elena. She was an architect working on a joint venture with Bennett Development. She was brilliant, funny, and incredibly patient.
Lucas didn't introduce her to Lily as a replacement mother. He introduced her as a friend. Elena didn't try to force a bond. She didn't try to change the house or erase Grace’s memory. She simply showed up, asked Lily about her interests, and genuinely listened.
One afternoon, Lucas walked into the kitchen to find Elena and Lily sitting at the island, laughing hysterically over a complicated, disastrously failed attempt to bake macarons. Flour covered the counters, the stove, and both of their faces.
