Chapter 14 - The Public Fallout

The cancellation of the Bennett-Hart wedding was the headline of every gossip column and society page in the city. Vanessa, true to her toxic nature, immediately launched a ruthless smear campaign. She used her extensive public relations contacts to paint herself as the tragic victim of a man obsessed with the ghost of his dead wife.
Articles painted Lucas as cold, uncompromising, and emotionally damaged. Whispers circulated through the country clubs and boardrooms that Lucas was neglecting his business, consumed by erratic behavior.
Lucas ignored it all.
He fired the wedding planners, canceled the venue, and instructed his security team to block Vanessa from entering the Bennett Development corporate offices. He refused to issue a public statement or engage in the mudslinging. His silence infuriated Vanessa further, driving her to escalate her attacks.
She began targeting his business partners, planting seeds of doubt about Lucas’s ability to lead the company.
"She's toxic, Lucas," Marcus said during a closed-door meeting at the firm a week later. "She is calling investors, claiming you are mentally unfit to handle the upcoming downtown revitalization project. The board is getting nervous. They want you to make a public statement to calm the shareholders."
"Let them be nervous," Lucas replied smoothly, reviewing a set of architectural blueprints. "The foundation of this company is built on concrete and steel, not society gossip. If investors want to pull out because of a canceled wedding, they aren't the kind of partners we need."

"She’s trying to destroy your reputation," Marcus warned.
"My reputation doesn't matter," Lucas looked up, his eyes sharp. "My character does. And my character is defined by how I protect my family. Vanessa is a storm, Marcus. Storms eventually blow themselves out. We just have to hold the line."
