Chapter 16 - The Press Conference

The morning of the press conference was crisp and clear. The Harbor Point site was a massive expanse of undeveloped waterfront, currently filled with news vans, skeptical politicians, and aggressive reporters. Vanessa Hart stood near the back of the crowd, wearing a triumphant, vindictive smirk behind her designer sunglasses, eager to watch Lucas’s empire crumble.
Lucas walked up to the podium, completely bypassing the prepared notes his PR team had written. He didn't look like a man under siege. He looked relaxed, powerful, and utterly in control.
"Good morning," Lucas began, his voice echoing clearly over the sound of the crashing harbor waves. "Over the past forty-eight hours, there have been severe allegations made regarding the environmental integrity of the Harbor Point project. These allegations were based on leaked, outdated preliminary drafts from three years ago."
The reporters began shouting questions, but Lucas raised his hand, commanding silence.
"Instead of arguing with anonymous sources," Lucas continued, staring directly into the crowd, "I have decided to take unprecedented action. As of this morning, I have officially transferred fifty acres of the Harbor Point waterfront into a protected, irrevocable public trust. It will be converted into a state-of-the-art ecological park and marine research sanctuary, fully funded by Bennett Development."
A stunned silence fell over the crowd. The environmental lobbyists exchanged shocked, thrilled glances.
"Furthermore," Lucas said, signaling to his team. Massive, high-definition digital blueprints were unveiled behind him. "These are the actual, finalized, city-approved blueprints for the development. As you can see, our green-energy integration exceeds state requirements by forty percent. The entire database is now available on our public website. Complete transparency."

The reporters erupted into a frenzy of positive excitement. The narrative had shifted instantly from corporate greed to unprecedented philanthropic conservation.
Lucas found Vanessa’s face in the crowd. Her victorious smirk had vanished, replaced by a pale, twisted mask of absolute defeat. She had tried to burn his reputation, and he had used the fire to forge a masterpiece.
