My stomach turned completely cold, but my hands remained entirely steady.
Lena stared at me with wide, horrified eyes.
“Did he really just say that?” she whispered, her voice trembling.
“He thinks the house is his,” I said softly.
“He thinks my entire life is his.”
I opened my secure email client on my phone, attached the raw audio file of Derek’s hallway threat alongside the cake-platform assault recording, and forwarded them straight to Melissa Grant’s private address.
Then I typed a single word in a text message to Melissa:
Proceed.
Thirty seconds passed in absolute silence inside the suite while Derek continued to rattle the brass door handle outside.
My phone buzzed with an instant reply from my attorney.
Security detail and local law enforcement officers are entering the main lobby now, Melissa wrote.
Your bank’s fraud department officially confirmed the illegal credit application thirty minutes ago. Do not remain alone with him under any circumstances.
I took a deep breath, smoothing down the front of my silk gown. The red blood stain on the neckline was still visible, striking against the pure white fabric.
“Ready?” Lena asked, standing beside me.
“I’ve been ready for eighteen months,” I replied.
I unlocked the heavy oak door and pulled it open.
Derek stood on the threshold, his face flushed red with anger, his ties slightly loosened. Patricia hovered right behind his left shoulder like an expectant vulture.
“Are you done performing your little tragedy now?” Derek sneered, glaring down at me.
May you like
“Yes,” I said cleanly.
“I’m completely done.”
