We sliced through the top layer of vanilla buttercream together. Flashbulbs went off in rapid succession, blinding us momentarily. The applause rippled across the room, led by Derek’s mother, Patricia, who clapped enthusiastically from the front row.
Then, without warning, the warmth vanished from Derek’s grip.
Before I could even take a breath, his strong fingers slammed into the back of my neck. He didn't just smash a piece of cake against my cheek—he drove my head downward with ruthless, violent force.
My face hit the solid wooden cake platform with a sharp, sickening crack.
Vanilla frosting jammed up my nostrils and blinded my eyes. Pain exploded across my cheekbone where skin met hard polished wood. The impact rattled my skull, sending a sharp spark of agony down my spine.
For three seconds, the entire world stopped.
I lay paralyzed across the cake table, frost-covered, numb, feeling the cold sticky cream mixing with a hot trickle of blood from my nose. The champagne-soaked laughter of two hundred people rippled through the grand ballroom before they even realized what had happened. They thought it was just playful wedding banter gone slightly too far.
Then I heard Patricia’s voice cutting through the noise, screeching with malicious delight.
“Oh, look at her! Derek, you completely ruined her makeup!”
Derek didn't let go. His fingers tightened brutally around my shoulder, digging into the soft silk of my wedding gown, hauling me upright like a broken ragdoll.

“Don’t embarrass me.”
