Derek looked frantically between the two police officers and my attorney, his composure completely shattered.
“What the hell is the meaning of this?” Derek demanded, trying to summon his usual posture of unearned authority.
“This is a private event! Get these people out of here!”
Melissa Grant stopped three feet from Derek, opening her briefcase with practiced, professional calm.
“Mr. Hayes,” Melissa said, her voice easily carrying across the silent ballroom, “my name is Melissa Grant. I represent Claire Morgan. My client contacted my office several weeks ago regarding evidence of systematic financial fraud and domestic violence.”
Patricia bolted up from the head table, her pearls rattling against her silk blouse.
“Financial fraud? That is absurd! How dare you make such wildly false accusations against my son on his wedding day!”
Melissa calmly removed a stapled set of certified legal documents from her folder.
“Yesterday afternoon, an unauthorized digital credit application was submitted to First National Bank,” Melissa explained coldly, looking directly at Derek.
“The applicant requested a two-million-dollar revolving credit facility, attempting to use equity assets belonging solely and exclusively to Claire Morgan as collateral.”
Derek’s jaw twitched. His eyes darted nervously toward his father, who was standing frozen near the bar.
“That... that was just routine paperwork for our joint marital assets!” Derek stuttered out, his voice cracking.

“It was fraud. And you thought I was too stupid to notice.”
