Chapter 1 - The Golden Cage

|

The crystal chandeliers of the Grand Plaza Ballroom cast a golden, mesmerizing glow across two hundred distinguished guests. Crystal glasses clinked, silk gowns rustled, and the air smelled of imported roses and expensive champagne. To anyone looking from the outside, it was the social wedding of the year. Derek Hayes, a rising star in the financial sector, was marrying Claire Morgan, a quiet tech founder with a modest profile and an enigmatic smile.

Derek stood beside me at the head table, his tux tailored to absolute perfection. His hand rested heavily on the small of my back, his thumb pressing into my spine with just enough force to remind me who was in control. To the crowd, it looked like a romantic gesture of possessiveness. To me, it was a leash.

“Look at them admiring you,” Derek murmured, his breath warm against my ear as the caterers pushed out the five-tier wedding cake.

“You did well tonight, Claire. Keep that pretty smile on your face and everyone will keep talking about how lucky you are.”

“I’m just glad the ceremony is over,” I replied quietly, keeping my voice smooth, hiding the tremor in my chest.

“It’s only the beginning, sweetheart,” he whispered, his grip tightening slightly.

“From tonight on, you belong to the Hayes family. Don’t ever forget it.”

I glanced across the room toward the main entrance. Sitting at table four was my maid of honor, Lena. She caught my eye and gave a subtle, almost imperceptible nod. She was holding her evening clutch closely against her ribs. Inside that purse was my freedom, but the trap had to be sprung perfectly.

The silver cake knife was placed in our hands. The photographer flashed his camera, demanding a classic portrait of the golden couple. Derek flashed his million-dollar smile—the one that had fooled my friends, my colleagues, and for a long time, me.

“Ready to make a memory, Mrs. Hayes?” Derek asked, his voice dripping with sinister playfulness.

“Ready,” I said softly.
