Chapter 8 - The Confession

|

When Garrett walked through the front door two hours later, sweating in his gym clothes and humming a tune, I was waiting for him at the kitchen island.

My laptop was turned around to face him, the glaringly empty bank account brightly illuminated on the screen.

He stopped dead in his tracks. The humming ceased instantly. All the color drained from his face, leaving him looking like a ghost in neon athletic wear.

“Where did that money go?” I asked. My voice wasn't a yell. It was a terrifying, hollow whisper.

He swallowed hard, looking everywhere but at my eyes. “Maya, I… I can explain.”

“Explain how forty-eight thousand dollars disappeared in three months, Garrett. Right now.”

He took a hesitant step forward, raising his hands in a placating gesture. “Look, it’s not gone. I mean, it’s an investment in our family. Mom needed some major repairs on her roof, and her insurance wouldn't cover it. And Tabitha… her husband lost his job, and they were drowning in credit card debt. They were going to lose their car.”

I stared at him, feeling the world tilt on its axis.

“You paid your sister’s credit card debt?” I asked numbly. “With my money?”

“It’s our money!” he shot back, his defensiveness instantly overriding his guilt. “We’re family, Maya! Family helps each other out. I couldn't just let them drown while we had tens of thousands of dollars sitting around doing nothing!”

“Family doesn't take money without asking!” I finally screamed, the sound tearing out of my throat. “You stole from me! You stole our future to fund your mother and your ungrateful sister!”

“I didn't tell you because I knew you’d react exactly like this! You’re entirely too obsessed with money!”

I stared at the man I had married, realizing I didn't know him at all.
