Chapter 19 - The Arrival

|

Garrett stammered, backing away from the ruined bed. “How did you… why are you dressed?”

I didn't answer him. I walked past him, stepping out of the bedroom and into the hallway. I pulled the decorative blanket off the three massive suitcases lined up by the front door.

“What is this?” he demanded, his voice cracking as he followed me. “What are you doing?”

“I didn't argue, Garrett. You wanted me up early. I'm up.” I walked over to the kitchen island and picked up the black leather folder and the bright red envelope.

Suddenly, the intercom on the wall buzzed loudly. It was 5:25 AM.

I pressed the button. “Yes, Henry?”

“Mrs. Davis,” the concierge’s voice crackled through the speaker. “I have two women here, a Lorraine and a Tabitha. They are demanding to be let up. They are currently screaming at me in the lobby.”

“Tell them my husband is on his way down to join them permanently,” I replied loudly enough for Garrett to hear. “If they don't leave the property with him in ten minutes, call the police and have them trespassed.”

Garrett lunged toward the intercom. “Mom? Mom, hold on!” he yelled, but I had already released the button.

He spun around, his face pale with horror. “You can't do this! They're family! You’re humiliating us!”

“No, Garrett,” I said, stepping toward him, my voice dropping to a lethal calm. “You humiliated yourself when you stole from me to fund them. You humiliated yourself when you conspired with your mother to assault me in my sleep.”

I picked up his phone from the counter and tossed it onto his chest. He fumbled to catch it.

“Get out.”
