Chapter 13 - The Master Plan

I walked out of the bedroom, my steps completely silent on the hardwood floors. The water shut off in the bathroom, and I heard Garrett whistling as he toweled off.
I went into my office and closed the door. My hands were shaking, but my mind had never been clearer. There was no more hoping for an apology. There was no more couples counseling, no more compromises.
They wanted to play games on my birthday? They wanted to test me as a wife in my own home?
I opened the bottom drawer of my desk and pulled out a sleek, black, leather-bound planner. I grabbed a pen, clicked it, and stared at the blank page for the upcoming week.
I started writing in sharp, violent strokes.
Monday: Lawyer.
Tuesday: Change the locks.
Wednesday: Prepare documents.
Thursday: Pack Garrett's things.
Friday: Final.
I looked at the five-day schedule. It was tight, aggressive, and left absolutely zero room for hesitation. But I was a project manager at heart. I knew how to execute a campaign flawlessly.
At the bottom of the page, I wrote one final sentence in bold, heavily inked letters:
“They want to test me in my own home on my birthday. They're about to discover something none of them is prepared to hear.”

For the first time since this nightmare began, I smiled. It wasn't a nice smile. It was a predator's smile. I closed the planner, tucked it safely beneath my tax files, and walked out to make myself breakfast.
The game was on.
