Chapter 11 - The Unguarded Screen

|

It was 7:00 AM on Saturday. Garrett was in the shower, the loud rush of water echoing from the master bathroom.

I was walking past the nightstand to grab my charger when my foot brushed against something. Garrett had left his phone on the very edge of the bedside table, and the vibration of an incoming text sent it sliding off.

I caught it mid-air before it could crash onto the hardwood floor.

As I grabbed the device, the screen lit up brightly in my hand. He had never put a password on it—he always bragged that he had "nothing to hide." I had never had a reason to check it before today.

But there, glowing violently against the lock screen, was a message notification from Lorraine.

“So you're really going to do what we agreed on Friday?”

Friday. My birthday was next Friday. I was turning thirty-two.

My pulse hitched. A cold, dreadful curiosity crept up my spine. I didn't want to snoop, but the memory of my empty bank account flashed in my mind. The trust was already dead; I was just examining the corpse.

I swiped my thumb across the screen. The phone unlocked smoothly, opening directly to his text thread with his mother.

I sat down heavily on the edge of the bed, the roar of the shower fading into white noise as my eyes scanned the messages. The conversation had been going on since late last night.

What I read over the next two minutes made the blood run absolutely freezing cold in my veins.
