Chapter 4 - The Unseen War

|

The silence that followed my threat was deafening. Garrett stared at me as if I were a stranger, his chest heaving. Without another word, he turned on his heel, grabbed his briefcase, and stormed back out the front door, slamming it so hard the framed photos in the hallway rattled.

I knew he was going down to the lobby to pay for Tabitha’s hotel out of his own pocket.

I went back to my office, sinking heavily into my ergonomic chair. This wasn't a sudden explosion; it was the inevitable eruption of a war that had been brewing since the day we got married.

When Garrett and I first met, his devotion to his family seemed charming. He was a good son, a protective older brother. But as the ink dried on our marriage certificate, the dynamic shifted. "Doing it for the family" became the excuse for every crossed boundary.

His mother, Lorraine, was the grand architect of the chaos. She had never liked me. I was too independent, too focused on my career, and entirely too unwilling to play the submissive, doting daughter-in-law she had envisioned. She constantly made passive-aggressive comments about my cooking, my lack of children, and my “untraditional” lifestyle.

Garrett, desperate for his mother's approval, never once stood up for me. If I complained, I was being "too sensitive." If I pushed back, I was "disrespecting his elders."

I had spent four years swallowing my pride to keep the peace. I had hosted Thanksgiving dinners, paid for family vacations, and smiled through endless insults disguised as 'advice.'

But the hallway ambush was a turning point. Something inside me had finally snapped shut, just like the front door. I was done compromising. And unfortunately for them, Lorraine was about to push her luck even further.
