Chapter 6 - The Ultimatum

|

That evening, Garrett didn't even make it past the entryway before he started.

“Why are you intentionally trying to destroy my family?” he demanded, throwing his keys onto the console table with a loud clatter.

I was on the sofa, proofreading a contract. I didn't look up. “Hello to you too. How was your day?”

“Don't play games, Maya. My mom called me crying at noon. She had to take a taxi to her appointment because you blatantly refused to help her.”

“She called me eleven times while I was presenting to a client,” I replied, finally looking up. “She demanded I drop my job to chauffeur her around. I told her no.”

“You were sitting at home!” he shouted, stepping into the living room. “It would have taken you an hour!”

“My time is not free, Garrett. My job pays the mortgage on this apartment. It pays for your car lease. It pays for the groceries.”

His face flushed dark red at the reminder. “She is my mother! You are my wife! You’re supposed to help her!”

“I am your wife, not her chauffeur. And I’m certainly not her servant.”

Garrett pointed a shaking finger at me. “She is deeply offended. You humiliated her. I am telling you right now, you are going to call her, and you are going to apologize for being disrespectful.”

I closed my laptop with a soft click. The air in the room felt suddenly very thin.

“I will not apologize for doing my job,” I said firmly.

“Then you take her next time!” he yelled. “Or I swear to God, there will be consequences.”

May you like

“Consequences?” I laughed, though there was no humor in it. “Are you grounding me, Garrett? Are you going to take away my allowance?”

He glared at me with pure venom, turned around, and slammed the bedroom door.
