Chapter 18 - Friday 5:00 AM - The Ice Water

|

My eyes snapped open at 4:45 AM before the alarm could even vibrate.

I slipped out of bed, leaving the covers slightly ruffled to look as though I was still asleep. I quickly dressed in a pair of sharp, tailored slacks and a silk blouse—my armor. I unlocked the bedroom door, leaving it cracked exactly an inch.

Then, I stood behind the door, waiting in the dark shadows of the room.

At exactly 4:58 AM, I heard the guest room door creak open. Footsteps padded softly across the hardwood floor toward the kitchen. The faint clinking of ice against glass echoed in the silent apartment.

A minute later, the master bedroom door was pushed wide open.

Garrett stepped in. In his hands, he held a massive plastic mixing bowl, condensation dripping down its sides. It was filled to the brim with ice water.

He didn't even check to see if I was in the bed. He marched straight to the mattress, raised the bowl, and violently dumped a gallon of freezing water, ice cubes and all, directly onto my pillows.

“Wake up!” he shouted aggressively. “My mom, my sister, and the kids will be here in half an hour. Get up and make breakfast!”

I stepped out from behind the door, completely dry, perfectly dressed, and totally terrifying.

Garrett spun around, dropping the empty plastic bowl onto the soaking wet mattress with a dull thud. His eyes bulged as he realized I hadn't been in the bed.

“You missed,” I said softly.
