Chapter 8 - The Journey into Wealth

|

The interior of the armored Maybach was completely silent, insulated entirely from the howling Chicago blizzard outside. The air smelled of rich leather and subtle cedar. I sank into the plush, heated seat, holding a still-sleeping Lily against my chest.

Marcus sat in the front passenger seat, constantly monitoring a tablet that displayed live security feeds and encrypted communications. He didn't speak to me, allowing me the quiet space to process the absolute whiplash of the last two hours.

I had gone from counting pennies for generic diapers in a freezing apartment to riding in a multi-million-dollar tactical vehicle, actively fleeing my criminally insane mother.

"We are approaching the private airstrip, Ms. Vance," Marcus announced, glancing in the rearview mirror. "The jet is fueled and waiting."

"We're flying?" I asked, my heart skipping a beat. "I thought Arthur lived in the city."

"Mr. Sterling maintains several residences," Marcus explained smoothly. "However, given the immediate security threat posed by your mother and her associates, he has mandated that you be relocated to the primary estate in upstate New York. It is a highly fortified compound. You will be completely untouchable there."

Twenty minutes later, the Maybach pulled through the gates of a private aviation terminal. I barely had time to register the sleek, silver Gulfstream jet waiting on the tarmac before Marcus was ushering us out of the car and up the airstairs.

The interior of the private jet was staggering. Cream leather seats, mahogany accents, and a fully stocked galley. A flight attendant immediately offered me a warm blanket and a bottle of warmed, high-end formula for Lily.

I settled into a wide seat, wrapping the blanket around us. As the plane taxied down the runway, I looked out the window at the receding lights of Chicago. My old life was disappearing into the snowstorm.

I looked down at Lily. Her small, innocent face was completely relaxed. She had no idea that the father I had told her was gone was actually the man orchestrating this massive, cinematic rescue.

"He really wants us," I whispered to myself, the reality of Arthur's persistence finally taking root in my bruised heart.

"He never stopped wanting you, Sarah," Marcus said quietly from the seat across the aisle, his eyes fixed on a file in his hands. "He tore this company apart trying to find a way through the legal barricades your mother erected. He didn't sleep for months after you left."

I closed my eyes, letting the gentle hum of the jet engines lull me into the first genuine sense of safety I had felt in nearly a year. I was flying into the unknown, but for the first time, I wasn't flying alone.
