Chapter 16 - The Arrest

The heavy mahogany doors of the ballroom swung shut behind the FBI agents, sealing my mother’s fate and completely removing her toxic presence from my life forever.
For a long moment, the ballroom remained trapped in a stunned, breathless silence. The elite crowd had just witnessed the absolute destruction of a socialite, executed with surgical precision by the city's most powerful man.
Arthur didn't miss a beat. He signaled to the orchestra conductor in the balcony.
Instantly, the musicians began to play a sweeping, elegant waltz, breaking the tension and breathing life back into the room. The massive digital screens flickered off, returning to their generic, glowing charity logos.
Arthur turned to me, offering a brilliant, fiercely proud smile. He extended his hand.
"May I have this dance, Mrs. Sterling?" he asked softly, his dark eyes filled with absolute devotion.
I smiled back, feeling lighter than I had in a decade. I placed my hand in his. "You may, Mr. Sterling."
He pulled me smoothly onto the polished dance floor. We moved together seamlessly, the music swelling around us. As we danced, the rest of the guests slowly joined in, the awkwardness fading as the reality of the power dynamic settled in. I wasn't just a scandal; I was the undeniable, fiercely protected wife of Arthur Sterling.
"You were magnificent," Arthur murmured, pulling me close, his breath warm against my ear.
"I had a good team," I replied, resting my head against his broad shoulder. "Thank you, Arthur. For believing me. For not letting her win."
"She was never going to win," Arthur promised, his hand resting securely on the small of my back. "The moment I saw you in that snowstorm with Lily, I swore I would burn down the entire world to ensure you never had to be afraid again."

We danced until midnight. When the massive clock in the ballroom struck twelve, signaling the start of the New Year, Arthur didn't kiss me for the cameras or the crowd. He pulled me into a private alcove, hidden from the flashing lights, and kissed me with a desperate, overwhelming passion that promised a lifetime of safety, trust, and unrelenting love.
The nightmare of the past year was officially dead. The New Year had arrived, and with it, a completely new, untouchable life.
