Chapter 13 - The Mother Crashes

|

Evelyn Vance was nothing if not dangerously arrogant.

The shock on her face quickly morphed into a furious, calculating glare. She didn't retreat. She didn't run. She believed her own lies so deeply that she thought she could still control the narrative.

As Arthur and I reached the bottom of the grand staircase, the crowd parted for us automatically. Evelyn seized the opportunity, pushing her way aggressively through a group of stunned politicians, stepping directly into our path.

"Arthur Sterling!" Evelyn declared loudly, her shrill voice cutting through the elegant hum of the ballroom. Several guests turned to watch the impending drama.

Arthur stopped, his posture radiating a terrifying, absolute calm. He didn't drop my arm.

"Evelyn," Arthur replied smoothly, his voice carrying effortlessly. "I am surprised to see you here. I was under the impression you were busy avoiding federal warrants in Chicago."

A collective gasp echoed from the surrounding socialites. Evelyn flushed a violent shade of red, furious that Arthur had instantly stripped away her dignified facade.

"How dare you speak to me that way after I protected your reputation!" Evelyn shrieked, playing the victim loudly for the audience. "I shielded you from a scandal! And this... this ungrateful girl stole my grandchild and ran away into the night! I demand you hand over my granddaughter immediately, or I will go to the press with everything!"

She pointed a shaking, manicured finger directly at my face.

"You are an unfit, hysterical mother, Sarah!" Evelyn yelled, trying to utilize the same abusive tactics she had used at the Christmas table just one week ago. "You are completely unstable!"

I didn't flinch. I didn't look down. I squeezed Arthur’s arm gently, stepping half a pace forward, placing myself directly in the line of fire.

"The only thing unstable here, Evelyn," I said, my voice steady, cold, and echoing with absolute authority, "is the fraudulent trust account you set up to launder my daughter’s money."

The ballroom went completely, utterly silent. The orchestra had stopped entirely. Every camera flash in the room was suspended.

Evelyn stared at me, her mouth opening and closing like a suffocating fish. I had never spoken back to her in public. I had never challenged her reality in front of her precious high society.

"You're lying!" she spat, desperately looking around at the guests who were now staring at her with profound disgust. "She’s a liar, Arthur! She’s trying to steal from you!"

Arthur offered a slow, dark, lethal smile.

"Sarah doesn't need to steal from me, Evelyn," Arthur announced, his voice booming across the silent ballroom. "Because as of this morning, Sarah is officially my wife. She owns half of everything I have."
