Chapter 20 - The Real War Begins

|

I stood in the silent study, processing the magnitude of his confession. The man I loved, the father of my child, was an underworld king.

A year ago, this revelation would have sent me running into the night, terrified of the violence and the shadows. But I wasn't that fragile girl anymore. I had survived starvation, psychological abuse, and a mother who tried to sell my child's future. I had learned that the world was cruel, and sometimes, the only way to survive the monsters was to sleep beside the biggest one.

"Are the Russians a threat to Lily?" I asked, my voice completely steady, cold, and calculating.

Arthur looked at me, surprised by my lack of panic. A slow, deeply proud smile spread across his face.

"They are trying to be," Arthur admitted. "But they are failing."

"Then we crush them," I stated simply, stepping closer and resting my hands on his broad chest. "We do not wait for them to probe the ports again. You find out who ordered the intercept, and you dismantle their entire operation. We do not negotiate our safety."

Arthur’s dark eyes flared with an intense, consuming fire. He saw the queen he had married, fully realizing her power.

"As you command, Mrs. Sterling," Arthur murmured, pulling me into a fierce, passionate kiss.

We spent the rest of the evening by the fire, mapping out the strategy to solidify the syndicate's borders. I wasn't just a wife anymore; I was a partner in the empire.

Later that night, long after Lily was asleep in the nursery, Marcus knocked sharply on the study door.

He didn't look relaxed. He carried a small, unadorned black wooden box in his gloved hands.

"Boss," Marcus said grimly, setting the box on Arthur's desk. "This was intercepted at the outer security gate. A courier dropped it and ran. No return address. But it bypassed the initial scanners."

Arthur frowned, stepping forward. He carefully unlatched the box and opened the lid.

Inside, resting on a bed of black velvet, was a single, silver pacifier. But it was severely tarnished, stained with a dark, dried substance that looked unmistakably like blood.

Tucked beneath it was a small, torn piece of paper with a handwritten note.

You locked up the grandmother, Arthur. But you forgot about the father I hired. We are coming for the bloodline.

Arthur stared at the note, his blood turning to absolute ice. He looked up at me, the terrifying realization dawning in his eyes.

My mother hadn't been working alone.

The fake miscarriage, the stolen trust funds... it was all funded by a rival syndicate trying to erase Arthur's heir.

"Lock down the estate," Arthur roared to Marcus, drawing a sleek pistol from his desk drawer. "No one gets in or out."

I grabbed Arthur's arm, my heart pounding, but my mind razor-sharp. The Christmas nightmare was over, but the real war had just arrived at our doorstep.
