Chapter 1 - The Hidden Envelope

|

The hallway of my mother’s house felt entirely different than it had ten minutes ago. The smell of roasted turkey and cinnamon candles suddenly made me violently nauseous.

I stood there, balancing my eight-month-old daughter, Lily, on my hip, staring at the pocket of my mother’s beige cardigan. Her hand had clamped over the fabric in a desperate, panicked gesture that completely betrayed her usual icy composure.

"What letter, Mom?" I repeated, my voice dropping an octave.

"Your sister is mistaken," my mother lied smoothly, though her eyes darted frantically toward the dining room where the rest of the family sat in terrified silence. "She’s just trying to stir up drama because you’re throwing a tantrum over a simple observation about the baby."

"I am not throwing a tantrum," I said, stepping closer. "And I am not leaving this house until you show me what is in your pocket."

My mother straightened her spine, pulling her hand away from the cardigan and crossing her arms. "You will not speak to me that way under my own roof. I am your mother."

"And I am Lily’s mother," I shot back, shifting the heavy diaper bag on my shoulder. "Give me the envelope."

"It's nothing," she hissed, her face flushing a dark, ugly shade of red. "It’s junk mail that accidentally got mixed into your old forwarding pile."

"Then let me see it."

Before my mother could step away, my younger sister, Chloe, appeared in the doorway. Her face was pale, and her hands were trembling, but for the first time in her life, she didn't back down from the matriarch.

"It’s not junk mail, Sarah," Chloe whispered, tears pooling in her eyes. "I saw the return address when she brought the mail in this morning. It has a wax seal on the back. It’s from Sterling Enterprises."

The air left my lungs. Sterling Enterprises.

That was the corporate conglomerate owned by Arthur Sterling—the man I had fallen in love with three years ago. The man who had disappeared into the night without a trace when I told him I was pregnant, leaving me completely alone, bankrupt, and humiliated.

"Give it to me," I demanded, stepping squarely into my mother's personal space.

"He abandoned you!" my mother shrieked, backing against the wall. "I am protecting you from his toxic lies!"

I didn't wait for her permission. I reached forward, my fingers digging into the knitted pocket of her cardigan, and forcefully ripped the thick, heavy envelope from her grasp. My mother gasped in outrage, but I was already turning my back, carrying my daughter and the stolen ghost of my past out into the freezing Christmas night.
