Chapter 15 - The Audit

Evelyn was hyperventilating, her eyes darting frantically toward the main exits of the ballroom. The facade of the powerful, put-together matriarch had entirely disintegrated, leaving behind a terrified, cornered thief.
She turned on her heels, trying to push her way back through the crowd toward the lobby doors.
But the crowd of socialites and executives didn't part for her this time. They stood firm, acting as an impenetrable wall of expensive suits and silk gowns, refusing to let the disgraced woman escape the spotlight she had so aggressively demanded.
"Move!" Evelyn shrieked, shoving uselessly against a prominent senator who simply looked down at her with abject disdain.
"I wouldn't bother running, Evelyn," Arthur called out effortlessly from the center of the room. "The exits are currently occupied."
As if on cue, the heavy double doors of the grand ballroom swung open.
A team of six individuals entered. They weren't wearing tuxedos. They were wearing dark windbreakers with bold, yellow lettering across the back: FBI - FINANCIAL CRIMES DIVISION.
Evelyn froze, her blood running completely cold.
The lead agent, a tall, imposing woman, marched directly through the parted crowd, stopping right in front of my mother.
"Evelyn Vance," the agent stated, her voice devoid of any emotion. "You are under arrest for federal wire fraud, interstate extortion, identity theft, and grand larceny."
"No, wait, this is a family dispute!" Evelyn babbled hysterically, holding her hands up. "My daughter is just angry! You can't arrest me in the middle of the Plaza Hotel!"
"Actually, ma'am, we have secured a federal warrant based on evidence of over a million dollars in misappropriated trust funds crossing state lines," the agent corrected smoothly. "Turn around and place your hands behind your back."
Evelyn looked desperately over her shoulder, locking eyes with me one last time. She wasn't looking for forgiveness; she was looking for a weakness to exploit, a final thread of the obedient daughter she used to control.
I stared back at her, feeling absolutely nothing but a profound, liberating emptiness. The woman who had tormented me was gone.
"Sarah, please!" Evelyn begged, tears streaming down her ruined makeup. "I'm your mother!"
"I don't have a mother," I said clearly. "I have a daughter. And she is completely safe from you."

The FBI agent forcibly turned Evelyn around, snapping heavy steel handcuffs around her wrists. The sharp click of the metal echoed through the quiet ballroom, a beautiful, definitive sound of justice.
Evelyn was marched out of the gala in disgrace, surrounded by federal agents, her empire officially reduced to ashes.
