Chapter 14 - The Public Humiliation

|

The word "wife" hit the ballroom like a physical shockwave.

Evelyn staggered backward, her champagne flute slipping from her trembling fingers and shattering loudly against the polished marble floor.

"Wife?" she choked out, her eyes darting frantically between Arthur and me. "No... no, that's impossible! You hate her! You sent a cease-and-desist!"

"I sent a cease-and-desist to a ghost, Evelyn," Arthur corrected, his voice turning into a ruthless, cutting blade. "Because you forged medical documents claiming my daughter had died in a miscarriage. You forged legal documents claiming my wife wanted nothing to do with me."

The murmurs in the crowd escalated into audible gasps of horror. In the world of high society, financial ruin was common, but forging the death of an heir was an unforgivable, sociopathic taboo.

"He's making it up!" Evelyn shrieked, panic completely overwhelming her logic. "I have proof! I have emails!"

Arthur didn't argue with her. He simply raised his hand and snapped his fingers.

Instantly, the massive, two-story digital screens lining the walls of the ballroom—screens normally used to display the charity's philanthropic achievements—flickered violently to life.

The screens didn't show charity logos. They showed high-definition, irrefutable evidence.

The first image was the forged medical document bearing my fake signature, claiming a miscarriage. Beside it was a verified hospital record showing the healthy birth of Lily Vance.

The next image displayed Evelyn’s private bank account routing numbers, clearly highlighting the monthly $25,000 deposits from the Sterling Trust, juxtaposed with the corresponding $20,000 monthly withdrawals she was making to fund her luxury real estate business.

"You see, Evelyn," Arthur projected his voice over the stunned crowd, "when you try to extort a billionaire, you should ensure your digital footprint isn't managed by an amateur."

Evelyn looked at the massive screens, her entire life of deception, theft, and cruelty illuminated for the entire world to see. Her peers, the wealthy elite she had spent her life trying to impress, were actively backing away from her as if she were radioactive.

"Turn it off!" Evelyn screamed, covering her face with her hands. "Turn it off!"

"You spent my entire life trying to make me feel small, Mom," I said quietly, stepping closer to her, ensuring my voice was low but perfectly clear. "You humiliated my daughter at a Christmas table because you thought I was too broken to fight back."

Evelyn looked up at me, pure, unadulterated terror in her eyes.

"This is her last Christmas being hidden in the dark," I whispered. "And this is your last night in high society."
