Chapter 5 - The Legal Deed Realization

|

Ten minutes after I hung up on my mother, my sister Tessa called. I took the call purely because I needed a brief distraction from my morning inventory work.

"You are not doing this to me," Tessa hissed through the receiver.

"My business headquarters are located in this house!"

I had genuinely forgotten about her business venture. Tessa operated her "intention-based accessory" company out of my parents' spare guest room.

Her headquarters consisted of fifteen cardboard boxes, a shipping label printer, and dozens of cheap plastic trinkets she purchased in bulk online and sold as "spiritually charged crystals."

"Then your corporate empire will need to find a new office," I said.

"Where am I supposed to go, Ian?!" she screamed.

"I have inventory! I have a lifestyle!"

I looked up at the kitchen ceiling and took a deep breath.

"You are thirty-two years old, Tessa. I strongly suggest you look into an emerging industry called apartment rentals."

"You are a heartless monster!" she shrieked before slamming the phone down.

By Tuesday afternoon, the situation had escalated into a total circus. My father attempted to call my realtor, Melissa, directly to cancel the house listing.

Melissa, possessing the legal record of ownership, calmly asked him for his proof of title.

"I don't need my name on a piece of paper!" Ron barked at her.

"I am the master of this household!"

"Tragically, sir," Melissa replied coolly, "property law is governed by deeds, not personal feelings."

An hour later, my mother walked out onto the lawn with a black marker and taped a piece of cardboard over the 'For Sale' sign.

It read: NOT FOR SALE.

Melissa drove back to the property, removed the cardboard, and threw it in the trash.

Two hours later, Linda replaced it with a second sign: SALE CANCELLED DUE TO FAMILY DISPUTE.

Melissa replaced the entire wooden frame with a brand-new, reinforced steel sign.

The war over Brookfield Avenue was officially underway, and my family was losing ground fast.
