Chapter 13 - Bidding War Under Siege

|
Two weeks before moving day, Tessa called me, panting heavily into the phone.
"The stairs at this new place are an absolute nightmare, Ian! Carrying my boxes up three flights is torture!"
I held the phone close to my mouth, smiling into the empty room. I had waited nearly a month for this moment.
"Well, Tessa," I said softly, "maybe you should just sit on the floor between flights."
The silence on the phone was absolute perfection.
She slammed the phone down without saying another word. It was worth every single dollar I had spent on real estate fees.
Moving day arrived under gray, cloudy skies.
My parents had hired professional movers to pack their furniture.
Tessa, believing that moving companies were "scams," demanded that I send my restaurant prep cooks to haul her personal boxes for free.
I flatly refused.
At noon, I drove over to the house to perform the final walkthrough with Denise and Melissa before the keys were handed over.
As I pulled into the driveway, I witnessed a magnificent sight.
My father and my sister were stuck in the front doorway of the house.
They were desperately trying to haul the massive burgundy recliner out the door.
Even though the signed sales contract explicitly stated that the chair belonged to Denise, Tessa had decided to steal it anyway.
The recliner was jammed completely sideways in the standard doorframe.
My father was stuck inside the foyer, pushing with all his weight.
Tessa was standing on the front porch, pulling frantically.
Neither of them could move the chair an inch.
"Pivot it!" Tessa screamed at my father.

"I am pivoting!" Ron roared, his face turning bright red.
"It's jammed!"
